The Fall Of Every Season: From below

07/04/10  ||  Euthanatos

Hauntingly beautiful. Beautifully haunting. Either way you cut it, Mr. Marius Strand has accomplished something tasteful and lasting with his one-man epic The Fall of Every Season. The fact that this is his debut, then, is just mind-boggling.

The Fall of Every Season practices what we could loosely call as doom metal. There’s a lot more melody in it than the genre is usually known for, though. Marius does portray sorrow with an aggressive voice, but he immediately surpasses it with light, yet majestically performed clean singing, neatly balancing the vocal lines. The guitars offer repetitive riffs that are enriched by morose leads, always present and finely tuning every song. Atmospheric really is the most appropriate word for “From Below”. While definitely metal, there are so many nuances, like the sweet acoustic passages, reminiscent of Opeth’s gentler side, that make this quite the trip into the emotional spectrum.

There are only five songs on the album, but 3 of them are mini-epics in themselves, the title-track, “The Triumphant Beast” and closer “Her Withering Petals”. “Sisyphean”, a calm, soothing acoustic song, and “Escape of the Dove”, pretty much in the same vein, complete this masterful work and combine perfectly with the longer tracks, as well as giving the listener a breather between such powerful moments. As stated, Strand plays and sings everything, and that’s quite an accomplishment. He shows himself to be an accomplished and experienced musician, and a very soulful singer. Not only that, his song-writing is borderline genius and even the production, also his responsibility, can have no complaints.

The Fall From Every Season has me very excited for their next album, “Amends”, to be released later this year of 2010. If it’s anything like “From Below”, I’ll be very happy. If it surpasses it, something not at all improbable, well… I just might ask this man to marry me.

The cover: Also stunningly beautiful, and the very portrait of despair. Actually, the entire booklet is quite charming (yes, I actually bought the physical version of this album), more bands should take heed.
